Periodontopatías en adultos jóvenes del área de salud Mario Gutiérrez Ardaya

Resumen

Introducción: las enfermedades periodontales constituyen un problema de salud pública a nivel mundial y  su magnitud varía entre grupos humanos, por lo cual es necesario conocer con precisión las características del problema para poder intervenir y modificarlo.

Objetivo: describir el comportamiento de las periodontopatías en un  grupo de adultos jóvenes del  área de salud de la Policlínica Mario Gutiérrez Ardaya de Holguín.
Método: se realizó un estudio descriptivo transversal de serie de casos en pacientes adultos jóvenes que acudieron a consulta en el período desde septiembre de 2011 hasta julio de 2012. La muestra quedó constituida por 105  pacientes mayores de 19 años, de ambos sexos que pertenecieran  al área de salud, que estuvieron de acuerdo con formar parte de la investigación y sin  características de discapacidad física o mental. Para la recolección de los datos se realizó examen bucal, se determinó la gravedad  de la enfermedad periodontal  mediante el  índice  periodontal de Russell, revisado por la OMS y para medir el grado de higiene bucal se utilizó el índice  revisado por la OMS según criterios de Greene y Vermillium. En el análisis estadístico se utilizó como medida resumen el porcentaje.

Resultados: gingivitis prevailed in males (18, 10%) and mild gingivitis in females (12, 38%). Poor oral hygiene among males was more frequent (40, 95%) and gingivitis patients predominated in poor oral hygiene (29, 52%).

Conclusiones: la prevalencia de las periodontopatías  fue mayor en el  sexo masculino.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: periodontal diseases are considered a health problem worldwide and its length varies among the human groups. That is why it is necessary to know well the characteristics of the problem in order to act and modify it.

Objectives: to describe the behavior of the periodontal diseases in a group of young adults from the clinic “Mario Gutiérrez Ardaya” in Holguin City.

Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study on a series of young adult cases who presented to the clinic from September 2011 to July 2012 was achieved. The sample was constituted by 105 patients older than 19 years old and of both sexes who belong to the Health Area and agreed to be part of the investigation; and without any characteristic of mental or physical handicap. In order to collect the data an oral exam was done, determining the periodontal disease´s severity through the Russell´s Periodontal Index revised by WHO according to Greene and Vermillium´s criteria. In the statistic analysis the percentage measure was used.

Results: gingivitis in the male sex (18.10%) and mild gingivitis in the female sex (12.38%). Insufficient Oral hygiene was more frequent in male sex (40.95%) and gingivitis was predominant in patients with insufficient oral hygiene (29.52%).
Conclusions: periodontal diseases prevalence was higher in male sex.
